Overview



The Technical university of Varna is a public academic and research institution acting as a major partner to the City Council in respect of implementation of technologically intensive projects. The university itself is the second largest technological academic and research institution in the Republic of Bulgaria. For its over 40 years of history it has produced more that 30 000 highly qualifies professionals in various fields of engineering and technology. The present layout of the institution incorporates over 400 academic staff and another 400 support staff, the latter including developer and design engineers, PhD researches, technical and administrative staff. The university hosts at the moment the largest in the country ICT department, educating over 1500 students. Besides its purely academic activities the TU of Varna positioned itself as major player in the Hi-Tech research for the last years, pioneering in fields like value added services platforms for mobile operators, implementation of ICT tools for e-Government, introduction of on-line payments for public services, information support for industrial units. The university initiated the creation of the first Hi-Tech Business Incubator, the Hi-Tech Business Park and the Corporate University with largest Bulgarian companies as partners.

Accumulated experience and professional potential allows the institution to turn its sight to a number of prospective partners both in academic and research fields outside the country, which led to a number of agreements for joined operations and research. The university hosts at the moment the only hi-tech information technologies group in the region. The latter has major responsibilities for the development and support of most mobile based public information services, development of industrial control and information equipment, research in new communication technologies, power management systems (partner to EON subsidiary company in Bulgaria).

Well established relations and partnership with the local authorities including the City Council and the Regional Governor's Office opens to the university significant opportunities for promoting among the local community new services and ideas for these. This potential shall be largely used in the implementation of the principles and services of the EU-Pay project. Besides, due to its own extensive research and operational assets the university itself can host and pilot all stages of the implementation of the project through its community base of over 7000 students and staff.
